Affinity photo for windows review11/16/2023 ![]() So you might see a LR type of DAM software soon this year?! Serif is working in the Affinity series of products on a DAM type of software. If that is your work flow why bother with a PS type approach? Just trying to find out if I can actually get the same output from AF Photo, even if just one image at a time. The exported images usually don't go into Photoshop as they're not in need of further processing. I input 200 or so images into Lightroom, do my edits quick, then export. I know that Affinity Photo, being a Photoshop -type processor, isn't really built for that, like Lightroom is. It's almost like the raw converter in Photo just isn't the same or as competent, as regards Nikon nefs. I never use the "masking" in Lightroom detail sharpening. Even when I got the image to look pretty good I'd compare it to the final image I got from LR6 and, dam, the LR6 image was just cleaner/sharper/clearer. I tried the Radius at around 20-30% and more and the the amount all the way up to 100%. At least they let you use the Lanczos formula. psd from LR or RT to work on it in the Photo Persona, preferably using either Topaz Detail or Nik Sharpeners.Īdditionally, what size do you output from both LR and AP? If you downsize, then AP doesn't offer an automatic output sharpening option like LR does, so that can also affect the final sharpness. I've made a sharpening preset for my Coolpix A (radius 10%, amount 40%), but I think I'll be outputting an unsharpened. ![]() Mind you, LR sets a default value of sharpening, whereas the sharpening defaults in AP are at zero, so you need to apply it manually. Plus you can add sharpness locally (unlike in the Develop Persona of the AP). Second, the Detail Refinement algorithm is probably just a regular USM (with no threshold values) - in LR there are additionally the Detail and the Masking sliders (the former having a mixture of USM and deconvolution sharpening), so you get more at your disposal. Hopefully they'll add something like the AMAZE demosaicing in the future. At full screen it's hard to tell but it'd be nice to know I could get the same IQ from Photo that I routinely do from LR6.įirst of all, the demosaicing in AP for Windows (there's just one engine here, as opposed to the version for Mac) is probably worse than in LR. ![]() it's just at 100% I can see that the Photo rendition is "soft" for lack of a better word. I'm just asking about its Nikon raw developing capabilities. This is, of course, not taking into account all the usability of Affinity Photo. At full screen it's hard to tell but it'd be nice to know I could get the same IQ from Photo that I routinely do from LR6. The color rendition looks equivalent, the tweakability in Photo is sweet, it's just at 100% I can see that the Photo rendition is "soft" for lack of a better word. I've tried everything I can think of in the Develop Persona (but then maybe I haven't). That said, I'm playing around with developing raws from my Nikon D7200 in Photo and I have to say I just can't get the final image to be as sharp/clear as what I get from LR6. I do use Photoshop but not usually in my daily workflow. The output I get from LR6 is just fine for my clients. I downloaded the new version for Window just to see.įirst off, I do most of my post in Lightroom 6 using presets on import to speed things up then quickly tweak as needed. Yup, I couldn't pass up the $39 offer I got from Serif.
